Comments, inline comments and notifications
Pages in Orbit Folio have a discussion, so questions and decisions stay next to the text they are about. This page is for anyone who reads or writes pages. It covers page comments, inline comments, mentions, reactions, watching and the Folio inbox.
Who can take part
Section titled “Who can take part”Anyone who can see a page in a space that is not archived can comment and react. This includes people with the viewer role.
| Action | Who |
|---|---|
| Comment, reply and react | Anyone who can see the page, in a space that is not archived |
| Edit a comment | Its author |
| Delete a comment | Its author or a project administrator |
| Resolve or reopen an inline comment | The person who wrote it, or anyone who can edit the page |
Project administrators can delete any comment, so they can moderate a discussion.
Page comments
Section titled “Page comments”A page comment starts a thread: the first comment and the replies under it. Reply to a comment to keep a conversation together. Authors can edit and delete their own comments.
Inline comments
Section titled “Inline comments”An inline comment is attached to a piece of text you selected, so the question sits next to the words it is about.
- Select text in the page.
- Use the button next to the selection, or press Ctrl+Alt+M.
- Write the comment. The selected text becomes a highlighted quote in the page.
Only the first comment of a thread can hold the quote and be resolved. Replies are ordinary comments inside the thread.
Folio keeps the quote together with the text around it and finds it again every time the page is shown. The page text itself is not changed.
- Resolve closes a thread. Reopen brings it back.
- A filter shows Open or Resolved threads.
- The page lists its open inline questions, so nothing is lost when the page is long.
You can create a work item from selected text. If Folio cannot insert its key after the quote, the key goes into an inline comment on that quote. See Link pages to work, code and operations.
Mention people
Section titled “Mention people”Type @ and start a name. Folio suggests members of the project. A mention sends a notification to that person, as long as they can open the page.
Reactions
Section titled “Reactions”You can react to a page and to a comment. The reactions come from a fixed set.
Watch a page
Section titled “Watch a page”Watchers hear about new versions of a page. You become a watcher in three cases:
- you write the page;
- you publish a version of it;
- you comment on it.
You can also watch a page yourself. When a new version is published, watchers get a notification.
The Folio inbox
Section titled “The Folio inbox”Notifications arrive in the Folio inbox, which shows a counter of what you have not read.
A person gets one notification for one event. If several kinds apply, Folio picks the most personal one:
| Order | Kind |
|---|---|
| 1 | You were mentioned |
| 2 | Someone replied to you |
| 3 | A thread was resolved |
| 4 | A new comment |
| 5 | A new version was published |
Notifications respect page permissions in two ways:
- Folio writes a notification only for people who can open the page at that moment.
- The inbox checks access again each time it is read. If a restriction is added later, the notifications already sent for that page disappear from the inbox of people who lost access.
See Permissions, restrictions and public links.
Pages managed by Forge
Section titled “Pages managed by Forge”Pages synced from a Forge repository cannot be edited in Folio, but their discussion works as usual. Comments, reactions, labels and watching are all available.
