Plans and billing

Plans and billing decide what an organization can use and what it pays. They are Planned: Orbit is in private preview and nothing is sold yet. This page is for the people who will administer an organization, and it says what to expect.

Company sign-up is In development and opens at launch. Choosing a plan, payment and invoices are not built. Until launch, companies are set up by the Orbit team, who invite the first administrator by e-mail. See Create your company in Orbit.

The capacity quotas of a site are built, but plan limits are not enforced yet. See Quotas and limits.

There are four plans: Free, Team, Business and Enterprise. Every plan includes all five products. The price, the limits and the features of each plan are on the pricing page, which is the one place that holds the numbers.

The plan belongs to the organization. The pricing page also shows the catalog of the plans planned for launch, which may change before launch.

Every new organization starts with a 14-day Business trial, no card required. Orbit sends reminders before the trial ends.

After the trial, the organization continues on the plan it chose, or on Free. Nothing is deleted. Content over the limits of the new plan becomes read-only.

What an administrator will do Planned

Section titled “What an administrator will do ”

Once billing exists, an administrator of the organization will be able to do the following.

Task How it is planned to work
Choose a plan The plan is picked at sign-up and can be changed later. Enterprise is arranged with Orbit by contract.
Pay Payments go through Paddle, the merchant of record.
Get invoices and receipts Paddle issues the invoices and keeps a customer portal with receipts and payment methods. Enterprise customers pay by invoice under a contract.
Pay yearly Yearly billing is 20% cheaper than monthly billing.
Upgrade An upgrade applies at once and is prorated.
Downgrade A downgrade takes effect at the end of the billing period.
Add storage Team and Business can buy extra storage in packs.
Watch limits The organization is warned at 80% and at 100% of a limit. There are no surprise bills.

Paddle calculates and remits VAT and sales tax. The details of payment failures and the steps before an organization is suspended are in the FAQ on the pricing page. You can export your data at every step. See Backups and data export.

Who counts as a user Planned

Section titled “Who counts as a user ”

Plans are priced per user. The planned rules are:

  • An active person with the member or admin role in at least one site of the organization takes a seat.
  • Guests are free up to the number the plan allows.
  • Service accounts and agents are free, but their number is limited by the plan.
  • A person who belongs to two organizations takes a seat in each.
  • An invitation that has not expired holds a seat.
  • Provisioning through SCIM beyond the limit creates people without a seat. They get a seat at their first sign-in, if one is free.

A downgrade never deletes anything. If the organization is over the limits of the new plan, adding people and creating new content is blocked first. After a grace period, the content over the limits becomes read-only until the organization is back under them.

Enterprise will be priced by contract and has no public price. It will include invoices and a contract with an SLA. Several sites and your own domain are Planned. For a self-hosted installation, see Self-hosted Enterprise. To ask about Enterprise, use the contact page.
